Sudlan Island Chapter 2: Welcome to the Brigan House

As everyone got ready, they saw Sudlan Island, a picturesque landmass, looming ahead. Sudlan Island was a paradise of natural beauty, with its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush palm trees swaying in the gentle breeze. The sun made the sand sparkle, casting a golden hue over the landscape. In the distance, the outline of the city came into view, with its colorful buildings and bustling harbor. The ferry arrived at the harbor bay near the city, about a mile away; the harbor buzzed with activity as boats of all sizes came and went, and the air filled with the mingling scents of sea salt and exotic spices. The group marveled at the vibrant sights and sounds, feeling a sense of excitement and adventure as they prepared to explore this fascinating new destination! The ferry lowered a slip to the dock and signaled two loud blasts of its horn for the group to disembark.

The group began to exit in the following order: Morris stepped out first, followed by Kelora. Beulah had trouble exiting due to her two rolling suitcases and bags stacked on top. Kedy trailed behind cautiously with a backpack while Mito and Zatiny stepped off carrying two bags each. Harva brought a suitcase and guitar case that took up space, but she had packed light compared to Beulah. Preben was the last to depart, carrying two large duffel bags over his shoulders, with one having his duct chain hook tied to the straps, and as he reached the dock, he accidentally dropped one of them, making a loud noise that startled everyone.

"Aw, man!" The red-brown bear griped. "I hope nothing's broken in there!"

"What's in those bags?!" exclaimed Zatiny, recovering from shock.

"I have clothes in one bag and a few trinkets in the other," Preben replied as he zipped open the bag.

The group peaked inside the duffel bag, noticing some knickknacks piling inside with a few scattered out on the pavement, and they all unanimously thought, 'That does not look like a FEW in there.'

"Are you sure about that? Because it looks more like a collection instead." Beulah remarked.

"It is! It's my collection back home."

"Wow, you have quite the eye for unique pieces!" Harva commented, looking at the contents inside the bag.

"Thank you," Preben replied with a smile. "I've been collecting them for years now. Each one has a special memory attached to it."

Beulah spotted a small wooden figurine from the pile. "This one looks interesting. Where did you get it?"

Preben picked up the figurine and smiled fondly. "I found it at a flea market with my family last year. It's a traditional African carving, but the vendor had no idea what it was worth, so I got it for a steal!"

Kelora gasped. "Hey, I'd recognized the carving on that figurine somewhere! It was from a group of African craft artists making figurines out from bamboo."

Preben looked at the figurine in amazement. "Gosh! I knew this carving was special, yet I didn't know its history."

"Hey, maybe when we get settled in, you could show us the rest of your collection," Mito suggested. "I'd love to see more."

"Count me in!" Kedy piped in.

"Me too!" Morris added.

Preben nodded as he put his stuff away and zipped the bag closed. "Sure! I am hoping to discover if there are any unique items on this island that I can add to my collection."

As Morris stood by Kelora, the vixen was surprised to notice the purple-gray mouse appearing lanky and reaching her by her waist (minus his large oval-shaped ears). She thought most mice were only an inch tall.

"Hey, is everything all right?"

The vixen shook her head when she heard the mouse speaking to her.

"Uh, y-yeah. Sorry, I've never seen a mouse as tall as you are."

"Many have told me about it, but it's just part of my charm. At least that's what my pop tells me," Morris admitted with a hint of embarrassment.

Kelora chuckled and added, "Well, I guess he's not wrong."

"The only question is, would anyone look past that when he searches for that potential partner?" Beulah questioned.

Morris raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?"

"If we are considering something based on height, it might make it harder for you to find the "perfect" partner."

"Hey now, I don't think height should matter in finding a partner," said Harva, joining the conversation.

"I agree," Kelora added. "There are so many other important qualities to look for in a person besides their height."

Beulah nodded, realizing her previous comment may have come across as shallow. "You're right; sorry about that."

"It's okay," said Morris. "We all have our preferences. But it's important not to let them cloud our judgment when finding a meaningful connection with someone."

"Wonder if that could apply to us here." Zatiny wondered.

"You'll never know until you try," Harva assured. "I certainly hope that we can be great friends."

"Oh? You think so?"

"I do! Besides, we got plenty of time to get to know one another, friends or otherwise. It just takes time."

As Harva turned away, she missed the gray cat eying her with a small smile.

After waiting a while, the group was getting antsy. Kelora looked at her watch and hummed with concern. "Strange, our ride should be here now to pick us up."

"Gee, I hope we're not too late," Kedy said anxiously. "I don't want to be stuck waiting here forever."

"I don't mind waiting," Mito piped up, twirling his tail around. "The waters feel peaceful on the shore."

"There's that statement about the waters again," Zatiny whispers to Harva. "You think that cat hangs around them in his spare time?"

"I wouldn't be surprised," Harva answered. "Cats are known for their love of water, after all."

"Really?" Zatiny raised an eyebrow. "I thought they hated it. I mean, I'm a bit wary of it myself."

"Well, some do," Harva conceded. "But others can't get enough of it. Besides, seeing how Mito somehow knew when we were about to dock from the waters, it's not that far off."

Zatiny nodded. "I bet that was a surprise."

"Maybe," Harva smiled.

Soon, the group heard a horn sounding off. They turned to see a sleek, dark blue/red striped shuttle bus pulling up. The driver stepped out and waved to them, "Your ride to the city is here, folks!"

As they neared the shuttle, they couldn't help but admire its gleaming exterior reflecting the sunlight. The driver, dressed sharply in a suit and tie, greeted them warmly while loading their additional bags before they boarded the shuttle. Once inside, they were delighted to discover plush leather seats, a modern interior, and refreshing air conditioning. The group felt like esteemed guests enjoying a VIP experience.

"Okay, I can get used to this." Beulah grinned as she sat down.

The rest of the group couldn't help but agree with the sentiment. They were all impressed with the luxurious shuttle and how comfortable it was. The smooth ride and the immaculate interior made them feel like they were riding in style! That feeling continued as they passed through several fields of varying shades of green decorating in lush forests with gleaming aqua lakes scattered throughout.

"Wow!" Harva said in awe. "These fields look amazing, eh guys?"

"Yeah!" Preben agreed. "Everything looks so bright and fresh."

"So are the lakes!" Mito beamed.

Even Zatiny was impressed by the picturesque look, though he kept it to himself. 'This island's foliage could be an opportunity to make a better portfolio for my sketches.'

His thoughts were interrupted when he heard Kedy called out, "Everybody, look up ahead!"

They followed where the little groundhog was pointing and discovered a bustling city. The city's skyline was a captivating blend of traditional and modern architecture, with sleek skyscrapers that gracefully complemented the more classic structures. It was reminiscent of a beautifully crafted panoramic painting, adding to the city's appeal!

"Welcome to Remont City, folks!" The driver declared when the shuttle entered.

The group was amazed at the sight before them. They observed the residents going about their daily activities and noticed a variety of common animals and some unusual anthropomorphic creatures. These unique beings showed different mammal characteristics, creating a fascinating amalgamation of forms.

"I wonder what those guys might be?" Mito wondered, watching the blended creatures.

"Could be part of Sudlan Island's unique species," replied Morris. "This island might be populated with hybrids."

"Hybrid islanders, huh?" Zatiny murmured. "That's a new one."

"Boy, this island gets better and better by the minute!" Preben spoke eagerly. "I love meeting people!"

"Speaking of exploring," Morris said as he pulled out a brochure from the seats' back pockets. "Looks like we've got a variety of places to choose from on this island, like restaurants, parks, theatres, a beach, and even some historical sites."

"Sounds like we have many choices during our time here!" Kedy chirped excitedly. "Say, I wonder if there are any schools nearby?"

"And some gyms as well," added Mito. "I want to keep my tail in shape."

Then Kelora spoke up. "We can explore the island in a moment. For now, it looks like we're approaching our new home."

The shuttle bus pulled into a neighborhood street covered in a lush array of trees and houses ranging from craftsman style to simple ranch style. Of the last three homes on the block, one stood out. Near the corner was an enormous two-story house, appearing in a rustic style with brown bricks, marble decorations on a triangular roof covered with gray ceramic tiles, and tall squared windows covering each side. Despite its look, the house appeared in good condition, and the front yard, surrounded by clean-cut grasses, bushes, and a large oak tree, adds to the formal look.

"No way!" Harva gushed when the shuttle parked in front of the house. "THIS is where we'll be living in?!"

"It looks so big!" Kedy added, bouncing in excitement.

"Wow, I knew this house could be large, but I never imagined it to be like this," Morris said.

"I'll say," Kelora added. "It makes it a step up from mine back home."

"Mm, I'm not sure I like the style," Beulah commented. "Looks a bit dated to me."

"Speaks for yourself, Princess." Zatiny scoffed. "I think it looks kinda cool. Got some history behind it, that's for sure."

The group stepped out of the shuttle with the driver helping to unpack their stuff, and with a final goodbye and thanks, they waved as the shuttle pulled away.

A young man with blue-gray fur emerged outside the house wearing a white suit with a yellow tie. He appeared slender and had a large nose.

"Good day, everyone!" He eagerly greeted. I've been waiting to meet you all!"

The group is acquainted with the young man who introduces himself as Blake Reyilton, the island's real estate agent.

"So how old is this house anyways?" asked Morris.

"It has been part of the island for generations," Blake explained. "It was built in the late 1800s by a wealthy family of merchants called the Brigans, who had made their fortune trading exotic goods around the world, and they used this house as both a place to live and trading businesses. That's how the place came to be known by the islanders as The Brigan House."

The group made various noises of interest by this new information on the house.

Blake nodded before continuing. "However, due to financial difficulties faced by the Brigan family, they were forced to sell their house and move out."

"But if the Brigans were making money trading exotic goods, how did they lose businesses?" Harva asked.

"Changing times," Blake answered. "The island thrived on receiving help from other sources, so they no longer depended on the Brigans. At this point, the city took ownership of the house, resulting in it being up for sale to multiple owners."

"Multiple owners?" The group asked in unison.

"Indeed. Over the years, many homeowners have expressed interest in renting or buying the property due to its unique blend of Victorian and Gothic architectural styles. Of course, many have sold the pieces of equipment the Brigans used in their business to make more accommodating spacing. Thankfully, the city was generous enough to preserve some of the artifacts in our local museum."

The group was impressed by what they'd learned, and their interest in the new home grew even more.

"Boy, to think this house held such a rich history is amazing, isn't it?" Mito stated.

"I must admit, this is rather impressive," Zatiny said, folding his arms.

"Excuse me, sir?" Kedy piped up, raising a hand. "But you wouldn't happen to know more about those Brigan people, do you?"

Blake shook his head. "Oh no, young man. I've only known the houses on this island because of my job, but I have a cousin who's more knowledgeable about the island's history than me. You can meet him later if you want."

"That'd be great," Morris said, with the others agreeing.

"Splendid!" Blake grinned. "Let's take a look at your new home."

When the group entered the house, they found themselves inside a spacious foyer. A magnificent chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the area. Directly across from the front door, a wide staircase beckoned their attention, while a doorway led to the cozy living room. The interior decor had a pleasant autumn color scheme, creating a comforting and hospitable atmosphere.

"Now, let's get you all settled in. Harva, Kelora, if you two could follow me first."

Blake guided the tan vixen and Siamese cat to another doorway on the left leading to a hallway with a bathroom and two bedrooms.

"Your rooms are at the end of this hallway, girls. I hope you'll find them comfortable."

As the two said their thanks, Blake returned to the foyer and addressed the remaining six. "The rest of you, your rooms are upstairs."

Heading up the staircase, he showed the others additional bedrooms, a second bathroom, and a smaller staircase leading to a bonus room.

"The rest of you will find your rooms on this floor, and Morris will take the bonus room nearby. Once you're all done packing, meet downstairs in the living room." Blake instructed.

After Blake went downstairs, the group headed to their respective bedrooms to unpack.

Mito chose a small rectangular bedroom featuring wooden furniture, a white carpeted floor, and light-colored walls adorned with decorative wallpaper. Notably, this room lacked a bed, but a hammock was hanging in the left-hand corner by the window.

Next, Preben discovered an average-sized rectangular bedroom with coordinating wooden furniture and a carpeted floor. The earthy brown walls gave the room a retro look. It also included a desk with a large mirror and numerous shelves around it, which the red-brown bear quickly began to fill with his knickknack collection from one of his duffel bags.

Beulah was instantly drawn to a spacious L-shaped bedroom furnished with metal and plastic furniture. It had tiled floors and walls painted in bright, whimsical colors. One shelf held a vase of uniquely shaped flowers and a window seat across from the bedroom door.

Zatiny found an average-sized rectangular bedroom with poured floors, mismatched metal furniture, a wall lamp next to the bed and a ceiling light with brown trim. Although the room was dark with muted autumn colors, the gray cat didn’t mind.

Kedy's bedroom was large and square-shaped, with tiled floors and coordinating metal furniture. A clear ceiling lamp illuminated the paneled walls. Although the room resembled a coffee shop, it still retained a childlike quality that delighted the little groundhog. He marveled at the size of the room and the medium-sized bed near the door, thinking he could easily get used to this!

Morris headed to the bonus room and discovered a large L-shaped bedroom with an old-fashioned forest theme. It featured a stone floor, and a well-stocked bookshelf was positioned on the right-hand side.

Downstairs, Kelora settled into her small L-shaped bedroom, which had wooden floors, wooden furniture, and walls painted to resemble a stormy sky. She even placed some candles on a shelf just above her bed.

Lastly, Harva placed her guitar case in one corner of her large square-shaped bedroom, decorated in paneled colors reminiscent of an apricot tree, giving it a quirky look. She noticed a corkboard beside her bed on the right-hand side, which she thought could help her organize her ideas for creating new songs later.

Soon, everyone finished setting up their rooms and gathered in a spacious living room/dining room combo, furnished with wooden furniture, cushioned seating, medium-colored walls, and a large barn star behind the couches. Blake was standing by a coffee table with eight keys laid out.

"Has everybody settled in?" he asked.

The group nodded in agreement.

"Excellent! Before I leave, I want to present you with your house keys as a final gift to welcome you to your new home. I hope you enjoy everything Sudlan Island has to offer."

As the new housemates bid farewell to Blake, they reflected on what they wanted to see and do while on the island, making a list of goals as their new lives on Sudlan Island began.
